William H.A. Willbond, MSM, CD: A Soldier's Story of Service and Advocacy

The Early Years and Military Beginnings

Born in 1941 in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada, William H.A. Willbond, better known as Billy, embarked on a journey that would define his life at the tender age of 17 by joining the Canadian Army. It was the year 1958, and the world was navigating the precarious waters of international relations during the Cold War.

Active Service During Significant Historical Events

Billy's career in the military quickly escalated to active duties, where he found himself amid crucial historical events. In 1960, his service took him overseas during the construction of the Berlin Wall and extended through the tense period of the Cuban Missile Crisis. His commitment to international peace and security led him to serve with the United Nations on Cyprus in 1965, contributing to one of the many UN peacekeeping efforts.

Further Military Pursuits and Education

After serving three years as Operations Sergeant in the Canadian Airborne Regiment, Billy devoted time to expand his linguistic capabilities, studying Chinese for three years, demonstrating his dedication to broadening his skills for the betterment of his career and the effectiveness of his service. In 1977, he brought his expertise to the Special Service Force as Operations Sergeant.

Transition into Retirement

Billy's extensive military career spanned over two decades, culminating in his retirement from the Army in November 1979. His post-military life, however, remained deeply intertwined with the armed forces and his fellow soldiers.

Life Beyond the Uniform

Far from stepping away from his military roots, Billy cultivated a rich family life, marrying his beloved wife, Lynn, and becoming the proud father of four children and grandfather to five. His legacy continued to flourish within the military community, as he holds lifetime membership and active roles in several associations, including the Canadian Airborne Forces Association, the Queen's Own Rifles of Canada Association, and the Princess Patrica's Canadian Light Infantry (PPCLI) WO's & Senior NCO's Club (Retired).

Dedicated Veteran Advocate and Poet

William H.A. Willbond's advocacy for veterans is evident through his secretary role in the Mark Isfeld Memorial Chapter of the Canadian Association of Veterans in United Nations Peacekeeping (CAVUNP), and his leadership as the National Chairman of the CAVUNP Honours and Awards Committee, alongside a dedicated presidency at the International Community for the Relief of Starvation and Suffering (ICROSS CANADA).

A Contributor to Military Arts and Recognition

His pen, as mighty as his service, contributes profoundly to the International War Veterans Poetry Archives, preserving the emotional and historic heritage of military experience. In recognition of his selfless service, Billy has been honored with distinguished awards, including the Meritorious Service Medal and the Canadian Forces Decoration, amongst others.

Concluding Salute

William H.A. Willbond's journey from a young recruit to a seasoned veteran and advocate is a testament to his unwavering dedication to his country and fellow soldiers. Through his active service during pivotal moments in history, to his continued efforts in supporting veteran communities and expressing the profound impact of war through poetry, Billy's life stands as a beacon of commitment, courage, and compassion.
